A harmless bug has allowed some ill-intended players to bring over 8 billion OSRS GP into the Fresh Start Worlds. OSRS Fresh Start World servers were launched in October 2022 as a separate game mode with a brand-new economy. This means that all the items and OSRS GP in Fresh Start Worlds are new and have only been generated since the launch of the server. A critical bug allowed a consistent amount of OSRS gold to be smuggled into the fresh economy. Just a few days after launch, a handful of players were able to identify and exploit a critical game bug that allowed the transfer of OSRS GP from the main game into the Fresh Start Worlds. Since Jagex has expressed that swapping the main game OSRS gold for the Fresh Start currency is not a bannable offense, the bug exploiters with OSRS accounts for sale could swap the currencies to generate an infinite amount of Fresh Start gold virtually.
The Bug
The bug that the players identified occurred every time a player would access their own main game clan hall coffer. Getting into your clan with a Fresh Start account was a simple task as you could simply join the PvP arena server where you’re yet again in a different game mode with a new saved profile with new stats. After being invited and given permission to withdraw from the clan coffer, you could withdraw any amount of OSRS GP into the Fresh Start world.
Gold Swapping
Because gold swapping is legal, Jagex stated that they don’t encourage it but won’t ban anyone from doing it. A few players made their swapping businesses in which they would profit slightly from helping other players get the currency in the game mode they want to play.
A harmless bug has allowed some ill-intended players to bring over 8 billion OSRS GP into the Fresh Start Worlds. OSRS Fresh Start World servers were launched in October 2022 as a separate game mode with a brand-new economy.
Some professional swappers noticed a considerable amount of Fresh Start OSRS GP being swapped for the main game currency. This was very suspicious as the probability that such an extended amount of OSRS GP to be generated within such a short timeframe from launch was insanely low. A few other players have also noticed too much OSRS gold and started reporting players for it. Still, since the bug was known only to a few players, they were determining what they were looking for and what they were reporting. Therefore, it was a bunch of reports based on many legitimate suspicions rather than facts.
Skill Specs
A well-known OSRS content creator saved the day by sending a detailed video explaining the bug to Jagex, who a few hours later took action against the players who exploited the bug and smuggled gold from the main game into the Fresh Start Servers. Skill specs recorded himself creating the bug and explained how he could join his main game clan. While he was hoping that this could reach Jagex before any damage was done to the Fresh Start economy, it just got in time to prevent any further damage from happening. It was also enough to make Jagex take action since most previous reports from other players went by and never made Jagex react.
According to Sirpugger
YouTuber Sirpugger went even one step further and investigated the issue, as he also had suspicions about what was happening in the Fresh Start servers. As he describes in his YouTube video about the game bug, he interviewed a few players and received messages from others regarding the exploit.
Jagex responded swiftly to the Skill Specs video report detailing how the bug worked. The content creator confirmed that Jagex had already patched the bug 15 minutes after sending in the report of the bug.
One of the players he interviewed is one of the professional gold swappers who interacted with a few of the players who exploited the bug and swapped their gold. The gold swapper told Sirpugger that the exploiters were selling crazy amounts of Fresh Start GP. He also confessed that he bought over 6 billion Fresh Start OSRS GP from a single guy called reato. Sirpugger calculated that roughly 8 billion GP, the equivalent of around 30 billion OSRS GP, had been smuggled into the Fresh Start servers with the harmless bug.
Jagex’s Response
Jagex responded swiftly to the Skill Specs video report detailing how the bug worked. The content creator confirmed that Jagex had already patched the bug 15 minutes after sending in the report of the bug. Jagex also announced on their social media that they took action against a handful of players who exploited a bug that allowed them to bring OSRS GP into the fresh start worlds.
They also stated that accounts belonging to those who have abused the bug had been permanently banned. However, this could be an overstatement because people abusing bugs don’t always link all their accounts to one another. Jagex also informed that they have removed most of the smuggled OSRS GP, but have yet to release any official statement regarding how much smuggled OSRS gold they could track down.
