Most new citizens, if they enter Valheim at all, tend to stay on the ground for quite some time. It’s normal to be nervous about traveling through open skies; if you’re lucky your first flight will be with an experienced pilot who can show you the ropes. If not–and this is more likely–you’ll have to gain the skill yourself. Below I’ve laid out a step-by-step guide tailored to beginners, so pay attention!
Mapping Valheim
The first thing you’ll want to do is get your bearings and familiarize yourself with the landforms around you. You can do this by flying above them or if they’re tall enough, climbing atop them.
The map table in the Skyrigher’s Roost can also help you, but it isn’t 100% accurate and is only available to those who have purchased a copy of Lady Lastbreath’s Atlas.
Finding Your Wingmate(s)
The next step is probably finding your wingmates–that is, anyone who might be willing to fly with you. This can either be a friend that you ask or just someone around your own level of skill that you happen to cross into. If neither option is available, don’t sweat it! You’ll have plenty of chances to meet people as you continue playing the game.

Now the fun begins! Sit down and talk to your wingmate(s), tell them you’ve never flown before. They should be able to help you get more acquainted with the controls, which can be found on this handy cheat sheet that came with your starter kit (if not, may Freyr bless your soul). After a while of flying around and getting comfortable with the controls, start practicing landing.
Look Around and Take in Your New Surroundings
Valheim is a beautiful place, so even if you don’t have to land right away it’s okay to admire the view. When you think you’re ready for landing–you’ll know by the box message appearing, “You feel as though you could attempt a landing.”–press and hold S key to decrease altitude or X key to slow down. (Be sure you’re far enough away from any obstacles like trees or mountains before attempting to land.)
Flying Upgrades
If you want something more than the starter kit provided for your first flight, talk to a merchant in town; there’s one located on either end of the bridge that connects the main road to the Skyrigher’s Roost. You can also purchase flight upgrades in the R&D tab of your inventory.
Head to The Nearest Inn and Get a Good Night’s Sleep
Now that you’ve learned the basics of being a new Valheim citizen, it’s time to log off and get some rest. See you next time! New citizens can learn more about flying on our website in the Flight Training section.

There are also several in-game help guides available in the How To Play section for learning more about Valheim.
Talk to The Locals and Learn About Their Way of Life
Valheim’s a big place, and most of the NPCs will be more than willing to talk about themselves and their surroundings. You can ask them about their lives or anything going on right now in Valheim–a great way to get a feel for the world your character is in! Just don’t ask too many questions at once or everyone might get annoyed.
How to Plant Seeds in Valheim
Valheim is a dangerous and unforgiving world. The inhabitants of this land must fight to survive the harsh elements and the beasts that roam this unclaimed territory. There are also those that seek enslavement or destruction of all others. One may ask how we arrived here, but we were not given an answer. What we do know is that we may be the only ones on this planet, and we do not have enough food to last us if we stay for more than a couple of weeks.
